Recruiting … a quick lesson from Nehemiah

by Michael Chanley

I’m always a little bit amazed at the diversity of things one must master to lead in children’s ministry. Often we are like Nehemiah, trained as one thing and thrust into a plethora of other roles. Nehemiah, as you know, went from cupbearer to project manager, construction foreman, security chief, and master logistician. Like many called to serve God, we find strength in Him through our weaknesses. We find blessings in the challenges and so much of it is a walk of faith.

This month’s theme is recruiting. There is an art to asking someone to do something they may not know they want to do. There is a skill that is much deeper than just “filling roles” on a Sunday morning. However, so few of us are ever really trained on how to execute a successful recruiting plan. A children’s ministry leader has to master recruiting… or partner with someone who can.

As we dig into the conversation this week we’ll be updating CMConnect+ with training on how to recruit volunteers. We have a new video we’ll feature for our network group leaders to use in their gatherings this month. A quick side note, for those of you hosting regional networks, we are providing a new incentive this month to help you recruit people to join your group. Anyone attending one of our groups can get a 50% discount off of CM Leaders registration. It’s a massive discount designed to encourage people to join your network group in May!

This month is going to create an exciting conversation that I am sure will challenge everyone to grow in their ability to lead and recruit. You, just like Nehemiah, have to master many things. Don’t ever forget that it is God who is doing it through you and He has surrounded you with one of the essential tools He blessed Nehemiah with: COMMUNITY. Lean into those around you to learn more about recruiting and partner with someone at your church to help connect with other leaders. You can do this because He can do it through you!

I hope you will enjoy the rest of this month’s magazine articles and, as always, we look forward to hearing from you and serving your church community!
