In Grateful Memory

“This past weekend, an exceptional friend of our community went home to be with Jesus. Dale VonSeggen was a pioneer in ministry to children and youth. He and his wife Liz founded One Way Street, and inspired thousands in the use of creative arts to share the gospel around the world.

As news of his passing has spread, many are sharing how Dale impacted their life. One shared a long list of statements followed by the words, ‘because of Dale.’ We follow that example today in honor of Dale. Because of Dale, this organization, INCM, exists.

Dale was one of the five children’s ministry leaders and pastors who gathered in Denver, Colorado in 1980. This group of leaders had the vision, courage, and passion to start the Children’s Pastors Conference. The influence of his ministry over the years is immeasurable.

In Hebrews 11, the writer speaks of trailblazers like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses… who, by faith, trusted God’s leading and direction for their lives. Dale lived by faith.

He was a humble example of dedicated vision, fierce passion, and faithful perseverance. Today, as Dale rejoices in his eternal home, may it be a time to give thanks to the Lord for the unique ways He uses His children to further His Kingdom. May it also be a time to reflect on our calling and pray for relentless passion to reach children and families for His glory. Dale’s life reminds us that He is worth it all!”

– Jane Larsen, former INCM Board Member & Earl Radford, INCM Founding Board Member

As I reflect on Jane and Earl’s words and the stories I’ve heard over the past few years of Dale’s faithfulness, I’m inspired by the foundation he laid for thousands upon thousands of leaders to reach and disciple children.

We owe Dale immense gratitude for the leaders he mentored, encouraged, developed, and made space for. We are experiencing the fruit of his leadership in many of the resources we use today and the incredible strength of this community. What a blessing to have his faithful example to look to!

I encourage you to consider Jane and Earl’s invitation to all of us- reflect on your own calling and ask the Lord for the relentless passion you need to reach children for His glory!

There will be a Celebration of Life Service held for Dale at First Church of the Nazarene on March 7 at 11:00 am. If you feel led to offer an expression of thanks for Dale’s faithfulness, you can send flowers to 3800 E. Hampden Ave, Englewood, CO 80133.

In lieu of flowers, you can also make a donation to Children and Youth Ministries at Denver First Church of the Nazarene here.

4 Tips for Including Men in Your Children’s Ministry

Like many children’s ministers, I joined the ranks by being an over-eager volunteer turned employee. When I was in the basement volunteering, only 1% of our volunteers were men. I didn’t have a male Sunday School teacher until I was 16 years old. It seems an unspoken rule that children’s ministry leaders are female.
