Breaking Through the Barriers between You and Your Dream

By Julie Beader

Some call it a dream, some a life goal, some a vision. Whatever you call it, there are few things more frustrating than being stopped in your pursuit by what feels like an invisible obstacle. No matter how hard you try to push forward, it seems you are blocked at every turn. Let’s take a quick look at some possible barriers and how to break them. Each of these commonly overlooked areas can be tough to admit, but can be overcome. If you seem to keep dealing with the same issues repeatedly, if you don’t understand why things never seem to work out, or if it’s simply time to take a personal inventory, take a deep breath and read on…

Barrier #1 – A Victim Mentality.
Here is a powerful truth: you are ultimately the only person who determines your success, happiness and fulfillment. In other words, if your dream has not yet come to pass it is not someone else’s fault. Blaming others for your predicament is not only unhealthy, it will almost certainly prevent any change in a more successful direction. Consider Joseph. Here’s a guy who had every right to blame others but didn’t. We see him as a slave and as a prisoner but NEVER as a victim, and ultimately his dream was realized. Barrier breaker: take responsibility for your own life choices and stop thinking about who did or didn’t do what for you.

Barrier #2 – The Past
Phil. 3:13 says, “…Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead…” (NLT) Simply stated, it is impossible to move forward while looking back. The past is over. Good, bad, or otherwise there is nothing you can do about it now. By all means, learn from it, grow from it, and try not to duplicate the same mistakes again. But ultimately, you have to look forward if you are going to make any progress. Barrier breaker: let it go.

Barrier #3 – Poor People Skills.
Ever heard the old joke, “I’d love the ministry if it weren’t for people?” Okay, it’s a little funny, but it can also be a little sad. Too many people (both in and out of ministry) seem to short-circuit relationships regularly. If you have had numerous “bad experiences” in relationships it may be time to ask “what is the common denominator in all these situations?” (Hint: it’s you.) Barrier breaker: start learning to care about other people and develop good communication skills. There are TONS of resources out there; go get ’em.

Barrier #4 – Discouragement.
Thomas Edison once said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Only heaven knows how many times that statement has proven true. Disappointment is unavoidable, but discouragement can be fatal. It’s very hard to reach for a bright future while you are discouraged about the past. Barrier breaker: take stock of the progress you have made and keep moving forward.

Barrier #5 – Know-it-all-itis.
Let’s be honest. No one sets out to be a know-it-all, but there they are, just the same. The key to making sure you aren’t one is to constantly remind yourself, “I think I know, but I may be wrong.” It is only pride that needs to be right, and pride will not take you where you want to go. Barrier breaker: be teachable; talk less, listen more. As you break through these barriers, I believe you will move closer than ever to your dream. God bless you and your ministry and have a fantastic 2009!

4 Tips for Including Men in Your Children’s Ministry

Like many children’s ministers, I joined the ranks by being an over-eager volunteer turned employee. When I was in the basement volunteering, only 1% of our volunteers were men. I didn’t have a male Sunday School teacher until I was 16 years old. It seems an unspoken rule that children’s ministry leaders are female.
