This year at the Vantage Conference, Awana invited Ed Stetzer to talk about “Scripture and Society: How to Engage the Word and the World.” Stetzer is the Executive Director of LifeWay Research, a prolific author, and well-known speaker. In the session, the focus was on the Word. Statistically, Bible engagement impacts every other aspect of your growth as a disciple including seeking and trusting God, serving others, and evangelistic behavior. I loved how intentional Ed and his wife are in helping their children regularly engage with God’s Word. One of my biggest goals for my children is to pass on a love for the Scriptures.
Recently I had the opportunity to share on Matthew 25:1-13, a parable about the 10 maidens who are waiting for the bridegroom. Five were well prepared; five were not. Ultimately the bridegroom shuts the door to the wedding feast and when the five unprepared maidens knock on it, he replied, “Truly, I never knew you.”
Today, the most simple and prolific way we can make sure we know Jesus is by reading the Word. Leaders, how precious is the Word of God. Inside the pages of the Word, we hear God’s voice, spoken in the twenty-first century. These words carry the very voice of God and through this voice, God speaks with absolute truth and personal force. By this voice, He reveals His all-surpassing beauty. By this voice, He reveals the deepest secrets of our hearts. No voice anywhere anytime can reach as deep or lift as high or carry as far as the voice of God that we hear in the Word.
Are you looking at your life and wondering, “God where are you?” I implore you – look to the Word. If the last time you cracked the binding on your Bible was awhile ago – it’s just been sitting on the shelf, cry out to God the prayer of David in Psalm 119, “Incline my heart to your word. Open my eyes, that I may behold the wondrous things out of your law.”
Here’s my prayer: God – do something in me, tilt my heart, shift my heart, adjust my thinking, attitude, schedule, priorities, and mindset, so I might be inclined towards the Word.
