When We Give We Also Receive

By Joe Burchill

Since I serve in a missions minded denomination, mission trips are not new to me. However, the INCM training trip that I participated in earlier this year was one of the most well-planned and profitable experiences of my life.

After long hours of flying to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, our team was ready for action. English is the trade language of Malaysia which made communicating much easier. The only language challenge we experienced was the use of personal “slang” or expressions that caused the entire group to laugh or crinkle their noses at the phrase. That reaction was a clear sign that communication had gone awry. The Malaysian Christian workers took great pride in introducing us to their local cuisine. Chicken foot soup, anchovy cookies, and curry laced fish heads were a few of the exotic foods that were served. These meals actually bonded our team as we attempted to eat a bite of everything. Our new Malaysian friends appreciated our sense of adventure. What a wonderful opportunity as we crossed cultural barriers.

Teaching in a foreign culture offers opportunities to learn new things. I was given the task of describing the benefits of small group dynamics. This was a challenge for our local teachers since the Malaysia culture does not usually incorporate small groups as a teaching technique. Our team explored their view of relationships. Many were willing to embrace this new approach. After presenting what I thought was one of the toughest sessions in my teaching career, surveys revealed that it was the most appreciated seminar of the entire conference. God was glorified and I had to depend on Him for His plan to be accomplished.

Each evening we spent time with the local church workers and shared our passion for serving the Lord and His Church. It was fulfilling to hear the local Malaysian church workers also express their commitment to the work of the Church. On the last Sunday of our trip, we were invited to preach in the churches that were represented at our training event. We also had the privilege to witness the teachers applying the principles that had been taught during the week!

Jesus, the true Master Teacher, used this INCM mission trip to reveal Himself to me in a refreshing way. I was reminded that God can use us even when we feel inadequate. Through the INCM mission trip I saw God at work in the Church in Malaysia. God wants us to grow in our ministry experiences and to gain new insights. If you have not been on a cross cultural teaching trip, I hope you will consider the opportunities that INCM offers through their International Mission events. You too will be a blessed as you obediently respond to God’s call.

4 Tips for Including Men in Your Children’s Ministry

Like many children’s ministers, I joined the ranks by being an over-eager volunteer turned employee. When I was in the basement volunteering, only 1% of our volunteers were men. I didn’t have a male Sunday School teacher until I was 16 years old. It seems an unspoken rule that children’s ministry leaders are female.

Building Children’s Ministry Buy-In With Key Families

Your ministry is amazing! You are passionate and dedicated, and you pour out your enthusiasm week after week, month after month, year after year! And yet, sometimes it can feel like you’re the only one who is totally sold out and bought into the mission of reaching kids for Jesus.
