The Importance of Family Blessing

Blessing your family and empowering families in your ministry context to bless their families is a powerful, Biblical practice. I’ve found it helpful as I craft a blessing to identify a person and ask the Holy Spirit how they are working in the person’s life, particularly what environment of spiritual formation is the Holy Spirit at work? I’ve taken the environments from Michelle Anthony’s book, Spiritual Parenting.

Examples:

Environment of Identity

Ephesians 1 Blessing
In Christ, you have every spiritual blessing. God chose you before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight, no matter what you’ve done or what anyone has done to you. Because of his great love for you, he adopted you as his son or daughter through your connection to Jesus Christ. He has completely bought you out of sin and death through Christ’s blood. He forgives all your sins. He is bringing all things in heaven and on earth together under Christ, and you are part of that. You are sealed and protected for eternity with the Holy Spirit. This is who you are and nothing anyone else has said about you has more power than this. Amen.

Ephesians 3 Blessing
Remember this…God loves you…more than you could ever imagine. He loves with a love that has no beginning and has no ending. It’s a love you don’t have to earn and could never lose. It doesn’t matter if you feel like a success or failure, he loves you. It doesn’t matter if you are alone or surrounded by friends, he loves you. It doesn’t matter if you are righteous or guilty, he loves you. He loves you enough to send his son to live for you, to die for you and be raised for you. And even right now, Jesus is before the Father and he is speaking words of love on your behalf and he will return to renew you and all of creation. This is the most true thing about you. You are loved by God. Before anything else can be said about you, this must be said. God loves you and that will never change. Be at peace.

Environment of Out of the Comfort Zone
1 Peter 5 Blessing
May the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, bless you and keep you strong during this time of testing. May He cause His face to shine upon you and give you grace to endure with patience. May He lift up His countenance upon you to make you perfect and complete in Him, to establish you clearly in the direction He gives you, to strengthen you through spiritual knowledge and by the power of His Holy Spirit as you seek Him with all your heart. May the Lord settle you, making you secure and confident in His love and provision for your peace and well-being.

I’ve paired other environments with Scriptures to help you write your own blessings.
