Kids Choir Idea - Covenant

This idea is reprinted from the Best Proven Ideas gathered at Children's Pastors' Conferences from 1990-1994.

KIDS' CHOIR COVENANT

Two years ago our Kids Choir ministry had reached a plateau. The children were inconsistent in their attendance, and disruptive when they were there, making it difficult for the Director to work on any consistent music program with them. Because the music wasn't challenging enough and performances few, the children grew unhappy with choir. It seemed to be a no-win situation.

Realizing there were some needs to address, we created a Kids' Choir Covenant, to be established between each Choir member and the Choir Director. Each child would be asked to read, sign and submit a copy of the Covenant, before his membership in the Kids' Choir was established.

The result? Enthusiastic response from both the children and their parents, and especially the Choir Director. We now had Choir members who understood their responsibility and our expectations. Attendance soared and has remained consistent ever since! We are now able to undertake more challenging musical productions with an assurance of success! A new Covenant is signed by each child at the start of each choir season, reminding him of his committment and assuring us that the children are there because they want to be - not because someone said they had to be!
