A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and a church is only safe if your workers are educated about safety. Plan a safety meeting before VBS, camp, or summer activities. Here are some suggestions:
1. NO nut based foods. Allergic reactions can be deadly. Educate on any known students with allergies.
2. Don't stack chairs over 4 or 5 high. Children may try to sit on top of the stack and topple the whole thing on a friend.
3. No contests for seeing who can eat marshmallows, gummy worms, etc. the fastest.
4. Discuss the "ouch report" and how to fill it out.
5. Tell workers what to do in case of an emergency.
6. Consider CPR training.
7. Does your church have a defibrilator? If so, let the workers know the persons to contact for its use. ()Often the ushers)
8. Explain the importance of having phone numbers if kids are dropped off for VBS, etc.
9. Monitor trips to the bathroom.
10. No pillow fights on sleepovers on campouts. Glasses can be broken.
11. For camps: Bring mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
